Granule bags
PLA material is a biodegradable type of plastic. Starch is used as a raw material. The raw material is quite available, but processing it into plastic is expensive and difficult. In addition, the capacity to process starch into granules for future products is concentrated in only a few countries, which makes the raw material quite expensive.
Thesis about PLA raw material:
- as already discussed in the topic about the environmental friendliness of polyethylene, the production of granules for "organic" packaging, according to the data Research, has a detrimental effect on the environment (impact on the ozone layer and human health, soil and wastewater pollution, depletion of natural resources) 42 times more strong> than for the production of plastic bags. This means that only if you use an organic bag 42 times, it will not affect climate change more than polyethylene. Considering the low strength of the starch bags, it becomes clear that such circulation of products is impossible;
- the cost of PLA granules is three times higher than polyethylene;
- practically throughout Europe, the cost of a PLA bag already includes the costs of its disposal, which are borne by the industrial enterprises involved in composting. To date, there are no such conditions in Ukraine, since there are no landfills for organic composting, waste sorting systems are in the starting state (not popular yet).;
- PLA products ("starch bags") are not suitable for secondary use. In other words, you need to use new raw materials; each time to produce a package
- not all developed countries have abandoned plastic in favor of starch. In many European countries, the sorting and processing of synthetic polymers is simply well established. If you set yourself a goal and track where exactly synthetics have been abandoned, it will become obvious that these are the countries in which factories for processing starch into granules are located. All of them are part of the large "Bioplasty" association.
For a plastic processing machine, it does not matter what type of granules are put into it. Any plastic melts and is pushed through the nozzle. This process is called extrusion. Extrusion is one of the main technologies for processing plastic and obtaining various products from it. An extruder for plastic is used to perform the forming process.
In other words, it doesn't matter what companies produce: plastic or bioplastic, the technology is the same, but the production of starch bags is three times more expensive. At the same time, there are currently no conditions for their disposal in Ukraine, and it is impossible to recycle starch bags for reuse as ordinary plastic.
